Consumer Sentiment
(1966-Q1 = 100)
May 14, 2012
Consumer sentiment in May increased for the ninth consecutive month to its highest level since January 2008 according to the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Survey, although it remains well below its pre-recession highs. The gain was attributable to consumers' improving assessment of current conditions, most likely due to moderating gas prices. Consumers' expectations for the future eased slightly, which could be tied to disappointing job creation numbers in March and April. Rising consumer sentiment is favorable for retail sales, which account for more than two-thirds of economic activity. It is a positive sign for leasing activity in shopping centers in particular and all property types in general.
